ADVANI & Lok Saba Speaker Om Birla Lead Parliamentarians In Paying Tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru On His Birth Anniversary
PARLIAMENTARIANS led by Lal Krishna Advani and Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla on Wednesday, November 14 paid floral tributes to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964). Former President Pranab Mukherjee, ex-Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh,INC President Sonia Gandhi and other dignitaries visited Shantivan in New Delhi were his last rites were performed and placed wreaths. Among other distinguished persons besides former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla who paid tributes to Nehru in the Parliament House were Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines Prahlad Joshi; Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Prahalad Singh Patel; Chairperson, Departmentally Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development (Rajya Sabha), Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya. Sonia Gandhi, former President Pranab Mukherjee, former Vice President Mohd. Hamid Ansari and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after offering floral tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at Shantivan also participated in the birth day anniversary observed in the historic Central Hall. The Secretaries-General of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava and Shri Desh Deepak Verma, respectively also paid floral tributes. A booklet containing the profile of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, brought out in Hindi and English by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, was presented to the dignitaries. The portrait of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, in the Central Hall of Parliament House on 5 May 1966.
