ALIA Bhatt -Ranveer Starrer GULLY BOY Collects 204 Crore Worldwide In 12 Days

BOLLYWOOD’s musical drama film written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti and directed by Akhtar released on February 14 is becoming a hit   movie. It has evoked positive reviews from critics with grossing over INR 197 crore worldwide against production budget of INR 40 crore in less than a week. It is also tribute Akhtar, 46 years old lady Mumbai born film maker in India’s Mecca for film industry. Gully Boy made by the daughter of noted poet, lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar and screenwriter Honey Irani is about a youngster named Murad played by Ranveer Singh from a ghetto in India’s financial capital. Murad is born to a couple working hard to get him educated so that he could have a white collar job. But he dreams about turning a rapper entertaining people earning tons of money forgetting his economically backwardness and other disadvantages. The film showcases street rap from Mumbai’s by lanes. The film mirrors the challenges faced by the disenfranchised youth from the minority population. The film is co-produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar under the banners of Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment productions. Akhtar took up production of the movie feeling inspired by the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy . Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt play the leads with Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Vijay Raaz . Murad Ahmed, a final year college student, lives in the Dharavi slums of Mumbai. His abusive father Aftab brings home a much younger second wife angering the family. Murad nurtures a fascination with rap music and writes lyrics to express himself. His long-time girlfriend Safeena is training to be a surgeon and routinely meets him in secret. Forced to work part-time as a chauffeur after his father is injured, Murad continues to write, with his lyrics informed by the inequalities he eyewitnesses while on the job. Making acquaintance with local rapper Shrikant (alias MC Sher), he is drawn into performing his lyrics at underground shows and eventually uploading a video on YouTube. When Safeena eventually finds out, she reacts violently to Sky, and a horrified Murad decides to break up with her. As Aftab’s violence towards him and his mother escalates, Murad decides to leave home with his mother and work full-time for his uncle.Murad and Sher enter a contest to open for Nas at his Mumbai concert, and Murad moved to the grand  finale after a successful rap contest. When Sky expresses her romantic feelings for him, he decides to instead reconcile with Safeena. Murad’s confidence grows from interacting with rap fans’ appreciation of his performances, and he finally stands up to his father and uncle when they belittle his passion. The movie ends with Murad’s family and friends watching as Murad, the winner of the contest, begin his opening. The Principal photography for Gully Boy began in January 2018 and wrapped up in April 2018. It was premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on 9 February 2019.Post  success of the film in domestic market, the makers have decided to release the film with the subtitles in  India to reach out to a wider audience.  Despite   becoming a rage among film goers, Business Analyst and movie critic Taran Adarsh has predicted decline in Gully Boy’s box office collection due to multiple release. Anyway, the film is doing well in overseas markets and has netted profit after recovering the production cost.
