ASSAM’s NRC Published excluding over 19 lac people: State Govt & BJP assure affected persons of legal & other assistance 

Over 19 lakh people in Assam have been left out of the Final National Registrar of Citizens made public on Saturday, August 31 due to their alleged failure to submit required documents to prove citizenship. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said as long as their cases are pending in the Foreigners’ Tribunal, they cannot be declared non-Indians. In a statement in Guwahati, Sonowal said the NRC, which has been updated by the State NRC Coordinator and his team under the monitoring of the Supreme Court of India and supervision of the Registrar General of India. It is an outcome of the untiring efforts of thousands of people. He also expressed his gratitude to the people of Assam for their unconditional support which has yielded into the updating the NRC.He assured that those whose names have been excluded from the NRC would get an opportunity to file their appeal and be heard in the Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) as per the direction of the Union Government. The ruling BJP has directed all its MLAs and senior party leaders to remain in their respective constituencies to monitor the situation at the local level and ensure that no untoward incidents occur.“Besides, they have been directed to extend all help to genuine Indian citizens who may, for some reason or the other, fail to make it to the register. At the same time, we urge people not to panic. There are modalities in place for people who may fail to make it to the NRC,” State BJP general secretary Pulak Gohain told The Assam Tribune on Friday. He added that the State BJP is also getting ready to extend legal assistance to Indian citizens whose names may get excluded from the final document. “We will provide legal help to any Indian citizen whose name may be missing from the NRC. We have a legal team in our party. We will soon call a meeting of the Legal Cell and discuss on ways to carry forward this thing and formulate a strategy accordingly. We are committed to an error-free NRC,” Gohain said. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal said that his party has a tradition of extending legal assistance to needy people. “We helped people during the NRC updating process as well as those who lacked resources while facing cases in Foreigners Tribunals (FT) or as D-voters. We have experience of providing such assistance and now also we will extend all help to Indian citizens, irrespective of caste and religion,” he said. While 3.11 crore applicants were included in the roster. “A total of 3, 11, 21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in final NRC leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims. Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeal before Foreigners Tribunals,” Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator of NRC, said. The entire final NRC list has been uploaded on nrcassam.nic.in.Hard copies of the Supplementary List of Inclusions are available for public viewing at the NRC Seva Kendras (NSK). Any person who is not satisfied with the outcome can file appeal before the Foreigners Tribunals within 120 days. Assam government has earlier said those left out of the NRC will not be detained under any circumstances until the Foreigners Tribunals declare them as foreigners. Given the political sensitivity of the issue, there is tight security across Assam banning assembly of more than four people in some public places considered sensitive. All Assam Students’ Union and Asom Gana Parishad have expressed dissatisfaction over the list and move the Supreme Court of India for rectifying the mistakes and cross check the software through an expert agency. (AGP) President Atul Bora said that the party was dissatisfied as the numbers of names on the National Register of Citizens were below what was expected.
