KHELO INDIA YOUTH Games ends with defending champion Maharashtra retaining the crown followed by Haryana

Khelo India Youth Games 2020: Maharashtra emerge champions, Haryana finish second: Final Medal Tally

The   3rd   Khelo India Youth Games has concluded at Guwahati crowning Maharashtra champions as in the previous year. The defending champions  has bagged as many as 256 medals, including 78 gold and 77 silver, improving upon its last year’s performance with a haul of 256 medals. Haryana comes second. The third Khelo India youth games were held between January 10 and 22. Six thousand five hundred athletes from 37 teams are estimated to have partaken in the event. Close to 6,800 athletes from 37 states and union territories competed across 20 sports disciplines in Khelo India Youth Games.Ahead of its commencement, Chief Executive Officer of the Games Avinash Joshi told All India Radio that the upcoming event would be the biggest multidisciplinary games ever held in the country.  Cycling and lawn ball had been introduced as new disciplines in the games. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the torch relay of the competition. The torch was carried to all district headquarters to elicit the cooperation of the people for the success of the Games. Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Rameshwar Teli, presented the trophy to the winners .“I would like to congratulate all the participating teams from across states and everyone who has been part of this journey of making Khelo India Youth Games 2020 a mega success. Over the past 13 days the city was on song, witnessing some scintillating sports action. There was a feeling of competitive spirit and sportsmanship amongst all contestants and at the end we saw Maharashtra winning the championship. The tournament is a big boost towards achieving our Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long term vision of Fit India movement. I salute the hard work of all athletes that participated in the games as they will be the ones who will go on to bring major sporting laurels for our country globally,” said Sonowal. Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju, State finance minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, were among the many dignitaries and local celebrities who were in attendance .After the awards giving ceremony, Assam showcased its  rich cultural heritage led by a modern creative dance performance by Aimee Baruah. Live concert by Bollywood singing star Shaan enthralled the audience including the athletes.
