MAHATMA Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrated in NY

INDIA- Americans along with others paid warm tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 150th birth Anniversary at a function in New York. The Consulate General of India in collaboration with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) celebrated his birth anniversary on October 2nd near Gandhiji’s Statue in Union Square Park, New York. The program began with a rendition of Gandhiji’s favourite Bhajan, devotional song, titled “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Re Kahiye” by the music academy of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Accompanying them on the violin was Mrs. Vandana Sharma, former Regional Manager of Air India, Americas. Mr. Sandeep Chakravorty, Consul General of India, New York, spoke about the life and teachings of the Mahatma and their eternal relevance. He also spoke about   contributions made by Gandhi ji and the recent inauguration of ‘Gandhi Peace Garden’ at the State University of New York Old Westbury Campus by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Dr. Naveen C. Mehta, Director, BVB, thanked PM Modi for the message on Mahatma Gandhi that he had delivered at the UN. The pioneer of the initiative that culminated in installation of Gandhiji’s statue at the park is   Dr. Chandrasekhar. He recalled the efforts made to install Mahatma Gandhi ji’s statute in cooperation with several people. He complimented them.
