OM Birla Set To Be Lok Sabha Speaker Succeeding Sumitra Mahajan

OM Birla, 57, BJP MP from Rajasthan’s Kota and former three-term MLA, is all set to be the new Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. He is succeeding veteran BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan who did not contest 2019 Lok Sabha poll from Indore as in the previous elections. He is supported by ten political parties including Odisha’s BJD, Andhra Pradesh based YSR Congress Party besides the ruling NDA at the centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Raj Nath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah are among the proposers of his nomination papers which have been submitted to the Returning Officer. He is expected to declare elected by tomorrow if there is no polling scheduled on Wednesday.  Meanwhile, Om Birla’s wife Amit Birla told ANI that it was a very proud moment for the family. “It is a very proud and a happy moment for us. We are very thankful to the cabinet for choosing him,” she said.The Opposition will also be supporting Om Birla as the next Lok Sabha Speaker. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has passed a resolution supporting NDA candidate Om Birla for his candidature for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. National People’s Party, Mizo National Front based in the North-east, Lok Janshakti Party, YSR Congress Party, JD(U), AIADMK, Apna Dal and BJD are supporting Om Birla’s candidature for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.Om Birla filed his nomination on Tuesday In the 2019 Lok Sabha election,  Om Birla defeated INC’s  Ramnarayan Meena with a huge margin of over 2.5 lakh votes in the Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha seat.

Om Birla will be replacing previous Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who did not contest the Lok Sabha elections this year.

Once nominated, Birla, who won from Kota-Bundi parliamentary seat in Rajasthan, will easily become the Speaker as the National Democratic Alliance has a clear majority in the House.

If necessary, the election for the post may be held on Wednesday.

On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind swore in seven-term member of Parliament Virendra Kumar as the pro tem Speaker of Lok Sabha.

Pro tem Speaker Virendra Kumar had on Monday administered the oath of office to over 300 MPs on Monday.
