OM Birla Unanimously Elected Lok Sabha Speaker Succeeding Sumitra Mahajan

OM Birla on Wednesday, June 19, assumed office as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha after being unanimously elected for the august office enjoying the same status like the Chief Justice of India. The two-term MP from Kota and three-tem Rajasthan MLA has launched his political career as a student leader and then became President of the Bharatiya Juva Janata Morcha in his home state Rajasthan. He is a M.Com having educated at Government Commerce College at Kota and MDS University, Ajmer (Rajasthan).His name as Speaker in the Lok Sabha was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and endorsed by all the Members of the Lok Sabha. Birla, 56, who belongs to Maheswari community or Vaishya caste, succeeds eight- term MP from Indore Sumitra Mahajan. She had not contested Lok Sabha poll.  Representing the Kota parliamentary constituency since the 2014 general elections, Birla is a well-known political leader from Rajasthan. He is reportedly close to Nagpur headquartered Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Birla was reportedly hand-picked by Modi and BJP president Amit Shah for the post of Speaker. He is married to Amita Birla and has two daughters. He is more well-known and respected as a Samaritan and philanthropist in his home state.
