Polling for Delhi’ Assembly is on February 8

AMIDST agitation against and for the amended citizenship act, polling for Delhi’s 70-Member Legislative Assembly will be held on February 8 and the results will be declared three days later. Announcing the poll schedule in New Delhi on Tuesday, January 6. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora (in the picture)   said the Model Code of Conduct for the central and Delhi governments as well for political parties have become effective with the announcement of the poll program. About 13,757 polling booths will be put up for 14 million plus voters. The term of the current assembly expires on February 22.
Political analyst PK Chakravarty says it will be a do or die battle for BJP which remains out of power in the Union Territory to form the government after two decades. It is yet to project Chief Ministerial face. The ruling AAP  is projecting incumbent CM Arvind Kejriwal for the post. INC is another major party which will be in the fray in the absence of its most popular face Sheila Dikshit who had led the Congress government for 15 years until AAP formed government five years ago promising to eliminate corruption. In the outgoing assembly, the AAP has 67 lawmakers and BJP 3 whereas INC has none. BJP alleges AAP government has failed in all sectors. It has spent much more money on publicity drive to project its supremo Kejriwal as a cult figure than on welfare activities for the people.AAP claims it has provided free electricity and water to the weaker sections of the society. While the ruling AAP will be on the defensive, BJP and INC will be on the offensive pinpointing  its failures on varied spheres affecting the commoners
