NATIONAL Film Awards: VINDOD Khanna Gets Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Sridevi Recognised Best Actress, Newton Best Hindi Film

The Jury headed by Lahore born Shekhar Kapur, actor-director-producer, has recognised talent cum diversity in regional films produced in India while declaring prestigious 65th National Film Awards.  The awards will be given away at a function by President Ramnath Kovind on May 3 in New Delhi. The jury has also announced the best films in other Indian languages and achievements in various branches of film making besides recognising the contribution made by the mainstream of cinema. Bengali cinema has bagged several awards in many years, with young actor Riddhi Sen winning the coveted Best Actor National Award for his turn in the transgender love story Nagar Kirtan (PIC above) directed by Bengal’s festival darling Kaushik Ganguly. The coveted trophy comes to Bengal after 12 years since Soumitra Chatterjee won it for Podokkhep back in 2006. The award for the Best Bengali Film of the year has gone to  Atanu Ghosh’s Mayurakshi.

Popular Bollywood stars Vinod Khanna and Sridevi are being honoured posthumously with the Dadasaheb Phalke and Best Actress awards respectively. Shekhar Kapur said the actor was the most deserving candidate. Sridevi whose filmography spanned over 50 years appearing  in 300 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films .She is  recognised for her role of an angry mother seeking justice for her wronged daughter in Mom . Khanna, one of the biggest stars of Hindi films in ‘70s and ‘80s, became the 49th recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award, the only second actor to be named for the honour posthumously after Prithviraj Kapoor. Malayalam cinema has won several awards, including Best Director and Best Supporting actor. Director Jayaraj’s Bhayanakam won the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography.Jayaraj himself won the Best Director award for the same film. Hindi film star Divya Dutta was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in Irada which has also adjudged the award for the best film on environmental conservation/preservation. Mainstream blockbuster Baahubali: The Conclusion won national award for best popular film providing wholesome entertainment, besides being named for special effects and action direction. Ganesh Acharya won the choreography award for the Hindi film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.Oscar-winning music composer A.R. Rahman swept the best music direction category by winning Best Song for Kaatru Veliyidai and Best Background Music for the Hindi film Mom.Hindi film Newton, a dark comedy on Indian democracy, was named the Best Hindi Film and a special mention went to its actor Pankaj Tripathi for his portrayal of a cynical CRPF officer Atma Singh.The  jury panel comprises 10 members.
