JUSTICE Geeta Mittal Becomes First Woman Chief Justice of J & K High Court

JUSTICE Geeta Mittal was on Saturday appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court becoming the first woman judge in the history to head the same high court. Justice Mittal, 60, was Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court till she was assigned the coveted assignment. One Friday, Sindhu Sharma became the first woman judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. In 2014, Justice Sindhu Sharma also became the first lady advocate from the J&K High Court to have been appointed an assistant solicitor general of India. After her initial appointment as ASG in 2014, her tenure was further renewed for a period of three years in November 2017, according to Bar & Bench. Justice Gita Mittal was born on to parents who were in academics. An alumna of the Lady Irwin Higher Secondary School,  Lady Shri Ram College For Women  and the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University,  she was appointed as an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court on 16th July, 2004.After an illustrious  career as a lawyer in Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India .As a judge, she has presided over several jurisdictions including heading a Division Bench hearing criminal appeals involving life and death sentence references; matters of the Armed Forces; Cooperative Societies; Criminal Contempt References; Criminal Appeals; Death References; Company Appeals; Writ Petitions and Letters Patent Appeals relating to the Armed Forces. She currently presides over a Division Bench hearing writ petitions arising out of orders of the Central Administrative Tribunal and other service matters, says  Bar and Bench.

Justice Rajendra Menon, the chief justice of the Patna High Court, has been posted as the new chief justice of the Delhi HC. Kalpesh Satyendra Jhaveri, a judge of the Rajasthan HC, has been elevated as the chief justice of the Orissa HC. He replaces Justice Vineet Saran following his appointment as a judge  of the  Supreme Court of India .Justice Aniruddha Bose, a judge of the Calcutta HC, has been elevated as the chief justice of the Jharkhand HC.Government  has rejected  the Chief Justice of India headed Collegium’s  recommendation to appoint Justice Bose as the chief justice of the Delhi  citing lack of his experience to head the high-profile HC.Justice Vijaya K Tahilramani, a judge of the Bombay HC, has been elevated as the chief justice of the Madras HC. She succeeds Justice Indira Banerjee, who has been elevated to the top court. Justice M K Shah of the Gujarat HC has been elevated as chief justice of the Patna HC as the incumbent, Justice Menon, will now head the Delhi HC.Justice Hirishikesh Roy of the Kerala HC has been elevated as its chief justice.
