Aircel-Maxis case: CBI names Chidambaram, son Karti in supplementary chargesheet

CENTRAL Bureau of Investigation on Thursday named former UPA Finance Minister P Chidambaram, along with his son Karti and sixteen others in its latest supplementary chargesheet in the Aircel Maxis case at Delhi’s Patiala House Court. Special CBI judge OP Saini will consider the charges on July 31.The lawyer turned politician, who is now a Rajya Sabha Member representing Indian National Congress. His role in the murky   deal valued at INR 3,500 crore and INX Media case involving INR 305 crore has been investigated for several months by the CBI over which he had presided as Union Minister for Home Affairs during UPA regime. The ex FM is also accused of misusing his power and position as finance minister.P Chidambaram has been listed as an accused in the Aircel-Maxis case by the Central Bureau of Investigation in its fresh chargesheet. In the chargesheet some officials, both serving and retired, have been named. In the chargesheet CBI  has mentioned that two sets of money trails were discovered regarding Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance. The court will take cognizance of the matter on July 31.Last week, a Delhi court had extended Chidambaram and his son Karti’s protection from arrest till August 7 in connection with the money laundering case. The matter pertains to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance being given to the firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel. Chidambaram was finance minister at time. The Ex –Finance Minister who is his party’s Spokesperson on economic affairs has denied the accusations. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, also Congress MP, claims that CBI has no prosecutable evidence against Chidambaram.(with inputs from Republic & Times Now)
