KRISHNA Bose, ex-MP & educationist passes away

Krishna Bose, educationist author and former City College Principal, has passed away in Kolkata following heart-related ailments. She was former Member of the Lok Sabha for three terms and had taught at the City College affiliated to the University of Kolkata, for 40 years and was Head of the Department of English and later became Principal of the college for eight years. Bose was 89 and is survived by two sons Sugata Bose and Sumantra Bose and daughter Sarmila Bose. She breathed her last at a private hospital in Kolkata on Saturday, February 22. The Dhaka born scholar was first elected to the 11th Lok Sabha during the 1996–1998 term. She was also a member of Parliament in 12th, (1998–1999) and 13th (1999–2004) Lok Sabha. During her 3rd term, she served as Chairperson, Committee on External Affairs, Member, General Purposes Committee, Member, Joint Committee on Patents (Second Amendment) Bill, 1999, Member, Committee on Official Language. She was born to Charu C. Chaudhuri and Chhaya Devi Chaudhurani. Her father specialised in constitutional studies and was one of the secretaries of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. She married Sisir Kumar Bose, son of Sarat Chandra Bose, elder brother of Subhas Chandra Bose. He had fought against the British Raj and was imprisoned in Lahore Fort and Red Fort for his role in Subhas Chandra Bose’s escape from Calcutta in 1941 during the Quit India Movement and World War II.She  later penned a book on legendary independence icon Subash Chandra Bose. Bose has a B.A. (Hons.) and an M.A. in English Literature from Calcutta University, Calcutta, West Bengal and the prestigious degree of Sangeet-Visharad from Bhatkhande Music Institute, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has paid tributes to Bose and said “Krishna Bose did a commendable job to restore documents of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.”Earlier, Banerjee tweeted, “I lost someone respected, loved & admired by me. Saddened & shocked to hear about the demise of Krishna Bose, ex-TMC MP & wife of freedom fighter Dr. Sisir Bose. Being a part of Netaji’s family, she was a revered social reformer, renowned poet & a courageous educationalist.”Governor Jagdeep Dhankar said, “Paid floral tributes at Netaji Bhawan to Krishna Bose member of parliament 11th, 12th and 13th Lok Sabha. A noble soul. Her passing is huge loss to society. Last met her at Navy Day Celebration on December 04. She was great source of inspiration to us. May her soul rest in peace.”
