AICC President Rahul Gandhi along with senior party leaders were detained by Police on Friday for violating prohibitory order while leading a protest march to New Delhi headquartered Central Bureau of Investigation demanding reinstatement of CBI Director Alok Verma. They were lodged in Lodhi Colony Police Station and later released. Verma has been sent on leave and divested of his all responsibilities. He alleged “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has destroyed each and every institution in the country. Be it the CBI or the Election Commission. He is attacking each and every institution. And there’s only one reason behind it – Chowkidar chor hai. He has put Rs 30,000 crore in Anil Ambani’s pocket,” Rahul told reporters .Senior Congress leaders who had accompanied him demanded an apology from the PM for removing the CBI Director. Asked to commenting on the agitation, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said “The Congress doesn’t have any people’s issues to rise which is why they are taking up these non-issues. We should wait for the investigation report.”
The protest by the opposition came even as the Supreme Court directed the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to complete its inquiry against Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana within two weeks. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, heard Verma’s plea challenging the government’s order earlier in the day. It has appointed retired Judge AK Patnaik to supervise the CVC inquiry. It has directed Interim CBI Director Nageshwar Rao to refrain from taking any policy decision. The SC has rejected plea of Advocate Prashant Bhushan for dismissal of Special CBI Director Rakesh Astana, a Gujarat cadre IAS officer. The case will be resumed on November 12.Both Verma and Astana have made allegations against each other which will be probed by CVC under the supervision of justice Patnaik.
Congress workers and leaders also protested the action taken against CBI director across the country including Mumbai, Lucknow and Bengaluru.
