TRIPURA’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday demanded that Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s security must be strengthened as “Asia’s drug mafias have hatched a plot to kill him”, a party leader said in Agartala .Senior police officials refused to comment on the matter citing security reasons. However, some knowledgeable public say the NE state is being used for smuggling   drugs to neighbouring Bangladesh. “The Union Home Ministry has learnt that Asia’s drug mafias recently held a meeting in Myanmar and hatched a secret plan to kill the Tripura Chief Minister,” Tripura BJP General Secretary Pratima Bhowmik told media. She said the Home Ministry earlier this week communicated the “conspiracy” to the State Government and the Ministry is planning to strengthen the security of Tripura Chief Minister, who is Z  plus  security  protectee. Senior party leader in the state and former minister Ratan Chakravarty said that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh received reports that drug peddlers, in a recent meeting in Myanmar, had decided to kill Biplab Deb, according to an ANI report. “There are reports with Union Home Minister that drug peddlers in Myanmar are trying to liquidate Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. We have got reports from our party sources. Officials from the Home Ministry have spoken to our party leaders as well”, Chakravarty was quoted by ANI as saying. The drug cartel in the region has taken a serious hit after BJP-IPFT government came to power in the state and Myanmar-based drug peddlers are not happy about it, he added. In the last 6 months, the police confiscated over 50,000 kg of narcotics including cannabis, heroin, brown sugar etc. Over 120 people have been arrested. Drug peddlers are scared to trade as before as their business has taken a hit under this regime and we shall write to the home ministry to take the right steps, Chakravarty.  BJP activists were asked to ensure that CM Deb’s security cordon is not breached under any circumstances, so as to avert any attempt on his life. During  his election  campaign Deb  had committed  to eradicate drug menace  from the State if BJP formed  government .BJP  under  him ,had  promised  ‘Nasha Mukt Tripura’ crackdown on drugs boosted to boos  Indo-Bangla relationship. He claimed the drug claimed the drug-based economy in the state was worth INR 1,500 crore and a bulk of these drugs were ultimately smuggled into Bangladesh. Manik Sarkar led Marxist regime had failed to stamp out the drug cartel, some people alleged. Myanmar, incidentally, has long  land  and  sea borders with the  North-eastern region  (with Times Now inputs)
