Passing of senior journalist and author Sir Mark Tully

The Editors Guild of India (EGi) condoles the death of senior journalist and author Sir Mark Tully.
For more than two decades (from 1972 to 1994), he was the BBC’s New Delhi Bureau Chief (and later, South Asia correspondent). During this long tenure, he reported firsthand on some of the most tumultuous events in modern Indian history — from conflicts with Pakistan to the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the anti-Sikh riots which followed to Operation Bluestar.
His nuanced and sensitive reporting, and his steadfast adherence to the highest principles of journalism, meant that he enjoyed a degree of credibility and respect in India which arguably no other foreign correspondent had managed before or since.
Uniquely, he was accorded high civilian honours both in his country of origin, Britain, and his ‘karmabhoomi’ India, the country he made his home, receiving a knighthood, as well as the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.
The EGi extends its sincere condolences to his partner Gillian Wright and all his friends and well-wishers in India and abroad. Pic courtesy: The Sunday Guardian
