FORMER Revenue Secretary SHAKTIKANTA Das Assumes Charge As RBI Governor

SHAKTIKANTA Das has assumed charge as the 25th Governor of Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank. Odisha born Das is a 1980 Tamil Nadu cadre of Indian Administrative Service. His appointment if for three years.Shaktikanth Das, who had served both UPA and NDA regimes, succeeds Urjit Patel who abruptly resigned amid a face-off with the government over issues related to governance and autonomy of the central bank.”Assumed charge as Governor, Reserve Bank of India. Jaitley said his appointment was necessitated by the resignation of Urjit Patel as Governor of the RBI on Monday.”I think, he (Das) has the right credentials. He has been extremely professional, has worked under various governments and has excelled himself. I am sure, in meeting the challenges before India’s economy as Governor of Reserve Bank, he will certainly act,” the finance minister said. Das was appointed Union Economic Affairs Secretary by Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi. During his tenure as Union Economic Affairs Secretary, Das was widely regarded as one of the most powerful civil servants in India.
