Partha Chatterjee, Arpita in ED Custody Till Aug 3

AS  Partha Chatterjee, senior Bengal Minister and ruling  TMC General Secretary, and his aide Arpita Mukherjee are  being grilled by ED in Kolkata for their alleged role in the school teachers’ recruitment scam, Leader of INC in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhury  has demanded the  minister’s sacking. He has sent a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conveying his anguish over his continuation in as a Minister. The scam, which has shocked the people irrespective of their political affiliations, is reported to have occurred when Chatterjee was heading the Education Ministry. During the ongoing hearing on the case, the sitting judge  also came down heavily on him and asked CM and then Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to relieve him as the Minister for Industries, Commerce and Enterprise. Sixty-nine years old Chatterjee’s alleged association with Arpita, a part- time actress,  and a lady teacher in Santiniketan have not gone down well with the people. ED claimed to have recovered incriminating documents related to the scam from their residences. They were arrested following recovery of about 22 crore INR in cash, jewelry worth one crore INR and huge foreign exchange in Arpita’s residence. Despite CM and ruling party’s Spokesman Kunal Ghosh asserting that Arpita has nothing to do with the AITMC, main opposition BJP has posted pictures on social media about her presence in some party’s functions. The investigative agency also claims to be in possession of some documents about purchase of several assets in the joint names of the Minister and his aide across the State. BJP Vice President Dilip Ghosh said ‘’Mamata Banerjee has realized that they have amassed wealth illegally that is  why it is difficult for them to save themselves. She is now helplessly using the theory of “Political vendetta and revenge” “to save herself”. Edited by PK Chakravarty
