Srijit Mukherji Directing Mithali’s Biopic

Srijit Mukherji, 43, film director-screenwriter who predominantly works in Bengali cinema, is excited to direct the biopic on living legendary woman cricketer Mithali Dorai Raj. Currently captaining the Indian ladies in England alongside Jhulan Goswami and others, she has brought laurels from varied international championships. The completion of the film has been delayed due to Covid -19 protocols. He has taken over the mantle due to the exit of Rahul Dholakia who finds it difficult to adhere to the rescheduling of the shooting. Srijit, who has come into limelight following regular collaboration with veteran superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, is noted for helming Vidya Balan-starrer Begum Jaan. He will direct the Taapsee Pannu starrer sports drama titled Shabaash Mithu narrating the successful journey of Mithali Raj born 38 years ago to a Tamil-speaking parent at Jodhpur where his father was posted as an IAF officer. Mithali Raj started playing the game at age of 10. She lives in Hyderabad and is India’s ODI captain. “Being a cricket buff and researcher, Mithali’s tale has always been an inspiration to me. I was excited since I had first heard of this film being made and now that I am a part of it, I look forward to kickstarting the journey to bring this exhilarating story to the silver screen soon,” he told media. The film is backed by Viacom18 Studios. Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Studios said it was unfortunate that Dholakia, known for movies such as “Parzania” and “Raees”, won’t be able to direct the biopic.“Covid disruptions have required rescheduling of the shoot and as a result Rahul is moving on from ‘Shabaash Mithu.’ It’s unfortunate that after sharing and nurturing this dream for a long time Rahul has to part ways. His contribution will remain. I thank him for that and wish him the very best,” Andhare said in a statement. Andhare said he is confident that Mukherji will do justice to “Shabaash Mithu” as the helmer has also directed a segment on the studio’s upcoming Netflix anthology, Ray. Shabaash Mithu revolves around the life of Mithali Dorai Raj considered a beacon of women’s cricket across the world. Meanwhile, Taapsee, playing the titular role, is keeping her fans updated on her preparation sessions for the film and is on a ‘no break’ mood! The Bollywood actress recently wrapped up her upcoming new age thriller movie ‘Dobaaraa’ and has now begun filming for her upcoming sports biographical drama ‘Shabaash Mithu.’ Edited by @chakravartypk.
