TRIPURA Govt adopts austerity measures

Biplab Kumar Deb headed Tripura Government has adopted a  19-point austerity measures directing the heads of all government departments, PSUs, local bodies and other government organisations to slash down non-essential expenditure. “Office and contingent expenses should be cut down by 30 per cent, while the government departments should increase non-tax revenue by 10 per cent,”  Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath told media at Agartala. If any government official requires air conditioner or cable TV/DTH , he or she must seek approval of the State Economy Board. The Fifteenth Finance Commission has expressed concern over the increasing revenue expenditure. The Finance Commission has asked the State Government to control revenue expenditure as much as possible. The Commission has also directed the state government to ensure that there must be efforts to redeploy workforce in case of any shortage through rationalisation to curb revenue expenditure. A complete ban has been imposed on procurement of vehicles by the Tripura government. The employees have also been told to use e-mail communication to avoid use of paper bought from market. The heads of departments and other government organisations have also been asked to reduce expenditure on electricity and telephone by at least 10 per cent. They have been barred from holding fairs, programmes or exhibitions, but this would not apply to programmes sponsored by the Centre, it has been clarified. The  State Government will not buy any land as part of the austerity measures to ease the burden on the State’s economy.The State Cabinet had no option but to approve the stringent measures to address the fragile fiscal position for the north-eastern state dependent on central largesse. Meanwhile on Thursday CM Biplab Kumar Deb claimed the state has become coronavirus- free after its second COVID-19 patient tested negative. The Second corona patient of Tripura has been found NEGATIVE after consecutive tests. Hence, our State has become Corona free.
