GYMNAST Dipa Wins Much Coveted Gold Medal For India

PRIME Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Dipa Karmakar on winning Gold in vault event at FIG World Challenge Cup held in Turkey .“India is proud of Dipa Karmakar! Congratulations to her on winning a well-deserved Gold in the vault event at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey. This win is a prime example of her tenacity and never-say-die attitude”, the Prime Minister said. India’s mega star Amitabh Bachchan has also complimented her unprecedented achievement two years after resuming sporting activities at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup. He praised her by saying that he was a proud Indian because of her. Amitabh on Monday tweeted: “Congratulations to Dipa Karmakar. She has won gold in the world championships for gymnastics on the vault. You proved to the world that what was wrongly denied to you in the Olympics, you won it here. Proud of you. We are proud Indians because of you!”Karmakar, 24, from Tripura bagged gold in the women’s vault event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup on Sunday .Olympian Dipa, who missed a medal by a whisker at the 2016 Rio Olympiad, has returned to action after two years due to injury. She scored 14.150 to clinch the yellow metal. Dipa had topped the qualification round with a score of 13.400.

She also qualified for the balance beam finals by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 11.850.She will now feature in the Indian gymnastics squad  for the  18th Asian Games to be held in Indonesia from August  18 to September 2. There will be a total of 62 events of 40 sports. Dipa became the first Indian female gymnast to secure a medal when she bagged a bronze at the 2004 Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow, followed up with another bronze at the Asian Championships in Hiroshima. , Dipa won a bronze medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships becoming the first to achieve the feat for her country.(inputs  from DD sports & The Indian Express )
