PM Modi, CM Mamata Congratulate Achinta Sheuli

Debutant weightlifter from West Bengal Achinta Sheuli has smashed Commonwealth Games record in the 73kg category and clinched India’s 3rd Gold in weightlifting after Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga  won the first and second gold medallions respectively. While Mirabai is from Manipur 19 years old Lalrinnunga is from Mizoram. Congratulating Achinta Sheuli on the stunning performance, PM Narendra Modi, CM Mamata Banerjee and Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari said Achinta Sheuli has made India proud by winning gold and making the tricolor fly high at the ongoing Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He has overcome the failure in one attempt and topped the lineup. ‘’You are the champion who has created a history. Heartiest congratulations!’’, said Suvendu. Achinta, 20, had  won the silver medal at the 2021 Junior World Weightlifting Championships and is a two-time Commonwealth Championships gold medalist. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Achinta   set a Games record of 313 kg and claimed gold .He lifted 143kg in snatch and 170kg in clean and jerk to top the field ahead of Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad, who took silver with a total of 303kg, while Canada’s S. Darsigny claimed bronze with a total of 298kg. Achinta Sheuli lost his father Pratik, who was a manual laborer back in April 2014. Elder brother Alok remembers Achinta crying because they didn’t have money for father’s funeral. PTI says Achinta took up weightlifting back in 2012 inspired by his elder brother Alok.  Alok gave up the sport and started working as an unskilled labourer to support his family after the death of his father.
