Mamata Banerjee Proves Invincibility In Bengal

Notwithstanding law and order deteriorating in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee led ruling TMC has stunned political analysts by retaining Ballygunge assembly seat and wresting the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency from her bete noire BJP by huge margins of votes. The assembly by-poll in the South Kolkata constituency was necessitated due to the demise of Panchayat Raj & Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee and the by- election in Asansol was held after it was vacated by Minister of State in Modi led Government Babul Supriya who quit BJP after 2019 Lok Sabha Poll. Reportedly close to erstwhile Advani camp of BJP and outspoken critic of Narendra Modi, Shatrughan Sinha has defeated BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul by a margin of 30,3209 votes. In Asansol, Shatrughan Sinha polled 3,03,209 votes while BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul came second. Sinha bagged 6, 56,358 votes while Paul got 3, 53,149 votes. In Ballygunge, Babul Supriyo secured 20,228 votes more than CPI (M)’s Saira Shah Halim who clinched the second position. ‘’We have created history by winning with a record margin. It’s a victory of democracy, the people of Asansol, TMC workers and CM Mamata Banerjee,’ Shatrughan Sinha, who claims himself as Bihari Babu, later tweeted. What is noticeable in the by-polls is the percentage of votes polled by the Left parties after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and recent panchayat elections in India’s eastern State. PKC
