Prime Minister pays obeisance at Gurdwara Ber Sahib

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, November 09 paid obeisance at Gurdwara Ber Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district of Punjab. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Captain Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab. It is one the most sacred places of the Sikhs situated on the banks of river Ravi. … The Bedis (Khatris), descendants of Guru Nanak, built a new town and named it Dera Baba Nanak after their ancestor. The town has a number of Gurdwaras. Pilgrims come to this holy town in large numbers.

Inside the main premises of the Gurdwara, the Prime Minister offered prayers and was presented with a shawl by the priests. Thereafter PM Modi was given a tour of the premises and he visited the Ber tree under which Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is said to have meditated for over 14 years. After the conclusion of the visit the Prime Minister departed for Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district where he inaugurated   Passenger Terminal Building and flagged off the first Jatha of devotees to Kartarpur in Pakistan. He had lived for 18 years until his death on 22 September 1539. The gurdwara is built where Guru Nanak is said to have died. It is therefore the second holiest site of the Sikh religion after the birth place of Guru Nanak located in Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.Nanak Dev Ji was succeeded by Guru Angad Devi Ji who belonged to the place. He was the second of the ten Sikh Gurus. At the  Ber Sahib Gurdwara , PM Modi was received by former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Jagir Kaur, who is in charge of celebrations connected with 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak Dev. Wikipedia says  Guru Nanak worked for Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi in charge of his accounts. The Guru was temporarily jailed here on the orders of the Nawab while all the accounts where checked. It had been reported to the Nawab by some jealous people that the Guru was stealing from the inventory as his predecessor had. When the inventory was checked and found to be intact, the Nawab released Guru Nanak and apologized profusely offering Guru Nanak promotion. Guru Nanak refused to accept the position as he had decided to dedicate his life to the spread The Doctrine of Humanity.
