HIMA Das Becomes First Indian To Win Gold At IAAF World Championship For Under 20

HIMA Das from Assam has created history by winning the gold medal in the women’s 400-metre event at the IAAF World U-20 Championships held at Tampere, Finland, on Thursday. The 18-year-old athlete is also the first –ever Indian to bag the coveted gold medallion in this event. A beaming Hima after Clocking 51.46 sec for 400m, says she has broken the myth that “95% of Indian men including me can’t match that speed. It is a brilliant message for all those who think or say that women are physically weaker sex”. Hima  has won  the final at the Ratina Stadium to become the first Indian athlete to win gold in a world championship across all age groups. Hima had fared well in the earlier rounds, too, winning Heat 4 with a time of 52.25 seconds. She emerged on top in the semi-finals as well, winning her race in 52.10 seconds. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri, Virat Kohli Minister or Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore   and films personalities including   Anushka Sharma have complimented her for the historic achievement. Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma wished athlete Hima Das for her historic gold medal at the ongoing IAAF U-20 World Athletics Championship in Finland. Kohli and Anushka are in England right now where the Indian team is currently playing a one-day international series against the hosts.

The star couple wished Hima in separate tweets after the 18-year-old became the first Indian to clinch a track event gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. Anushka followed with her own tweet soon after, “#HimaDas, congratulations on creating history by winning India its first ever track gold at the World U20 Championships. You are an inspiration to every aspiring athlete out there. It’s a HUGE achievement and you have made us all proud.”
