Ram Vilas Paswan issues order asking officials to promote Made in India products
RAM Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, has directed his officials to avoid purchasing Chinese products and encourage indigenous goods. For this purpose, they can rely on the government of India’s gem portal. Commending the decision taken by the senior Minister hailing from Bihar national traders’ body, urged all other ministers to follow suit. As per the portal, places of production of all products are mentioned. CAIT President BC Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal have called for strict action against those who are branding exported goods as Made in India. And hence, urged Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goel to make it mandatory for giving more details including percentage of raw materials used for each product on sale to ensure that online and offline sellers and others cannot change the label for promoting products from other countries. There should be provision for legal action against such manipulation by some dishonest sellers. The government on June 23 made it mandatory for sellers on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal to clarify the country of origin of their goods when registering new products. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is learnt to be actively examining a similar proposal for products listed on private e-commerce platforms and is expected to hold a meeting with them later on Wednesday (June 24).ITS Website says with technical support of the National eGovernance Division (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) has developed GeM portal for procurement of both Products & Services. The portal was launched on 9th August 2016 by the Commerce & Industry Minister. Procurement on GeM has been authorized by General Financial Rules by making necessary changes in government rules. Presently more than 7400 products in about 150 product categories and hiring of transport services are available on the GeM POC portal. Transactions for more than Rs 140 Crore have already been processed through GeM. The GeM is a completely paperless, cashless and system driven e-marketplace that enables the procurement of common use goods and services with minimal human interface. GeM is a dynamic, self-sustaining and user-friendly portal for making procurement by Government officers.
